Saint Nikolaos (the Saint of the Cretans),is the capital of the Prefecture of Lasithi.It is located in the northern coastline of Crete,on the Western side of the bay of Merambellou.Its name emanated from the small Byzantine church that is located in the bay of Saint Nikolaos.Its older name was Mantraki,since a lot of stockyards with children that overwintered there.
The ¨Good Village¨ has certainly the most beautiful bay called Merambellou.It has been said that the southern coast of Merambellou bay has something of the features of the Riviera,but with virgin beaches and only a few hotels.The village has roughly 900 permanent residents and it is surrounded by green and mountainside,where the olive trees and the abundant and colourful bushes and plants reach up to the sea.
You might visit the most beautiful beach with palm trees of Vai,the palace of Minoa in Knossos, the plateau of Lasithi with the windmills, the island of Spinalonga and the island of Golden or Gaidouronisi, Matala with its caves, and a lot of other sights.
Moreover, there are many beautiful paths in the region, and Istro is of great archaeologica l interest. Because of this the coastal regions are protected by archaeology, with a result of the beaches remaining intact from exploitation. The exquisite beaches of the bay in Istro have regularly been granted blue flags for cleanliness and have been rewarded with goid stars.
